Gary Phillips began his Martial Arts career in 1981 when he was selected as the winner of three free lessons at the Chuck Norris Karate System. Gary wasn’t aware beforehand, but that third lesson would change his life forever. It was during that session that the one and only Chuck Norris walked in and surprised everyone in attendance! He made such an impression on Gary that he decided to make a career out of teaching Martial Arts. He worked hard to become the personal student of the Grand Master, In Hyuk Sa, who is considered a national treasure. After numerous years of dedication, Gary opened Kuk Sool Won, an International Martial Arts School in 1993. Here, they offer a comprehensive, traditional Martial Art, which is a 2,500-year-old practice. It focuses on mind, body, and balance with the goal of reaching Black Belt. These sessions take place twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They also offer advanced weaponry classes which include archery and knife throwing. Kuk Sool Won has even been featured in Black Belt magazine and was taught at West Point Military Academy for ten years. Before he was a full-time Martial Arts instructor, Gary served ten years in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer Third Class Jet Mechanic. Four of those years on active duty and the other six in reserve. He also once owned a local grain farm and is currently a licensed heating and air technician. When asked about the downtown area, Gary had this to say: “I love my location. When I tell folks we are located in the Knollenberg Building they know exactly where I am talking about. This building has a lot of history. We have so many great businesses downtown and I’m lucky to be in the middle of all of them.”
